漁夫的妻子桑娜坐在火爐旁補一張破帆。屋外寒風呼嘯，洶涌澎湃的海浪拍擊著海岸，濺起一陣陣浪花。海上正起著風暴，外面又黑又冷，這間漁家的小屋里卻溫暖而舒適。地掃得干干凈凈，爐子里的火還沒有熄，食具在擱板上閃閃發亮。掛著白色帳子的床上，五個孩子正在海風呼嘯聲中安靜地睡著。丈夫清早駕著小船出海，這時候還沒有回來。桑娜聽著波濤的轟鳴和狂風的怒吼，感到心驚肉跳。
古老的鐘發啞地敲了十下，十一下……始終不見丈夫回來。桑娜沉思∶丈夫不顧惜身體，冒著寒冷和風暴出去打魚，她自己也從早到晚地干活，還只能勉強填飽肚子。孩子們沒有鞋穿，不論冬夏都光著腳跑來跑去；吃的是黑面包，菜只有魚。不過，感謝上帝，孩子們都還健康。沒什么可抱怨的。桑娜傾聽著風暴的聲音，“他現在在哪兒？上帝啊，保佑他，救救他，開開恩吧！”她一面自言自語，一面在胸前畫著十字。
睡覺還早。桑娜站起身來，把一塊很厚的圍巾包在頭上，提著馬燈走出門去。她想看看燈塔上的燈是不是亮著，丈夫的小船能不能望見。海面上什么也看不見。風掀起她的圍巾，卷著被刮斷的什么東西敲打著鄰居小屋的門。桑娜想起了傍晚就想去探望的那個生病的鄰居。“沒有一個人照顧她啊！”桑娜一邊想一邊敲了敲門。她側著耳朵聽，沒有人答應。
“寡婦的日子真困難啊！”桑娜站在門口想，“孩子雖然不算多——只有兩個，可是全靠她一個人張羅，如今又加上病。唉，寡婦的日子真難過啊！進去看看吧！”
桑娜一次又一次地敲門，仍舊沒有人答應。
“喂，西蒙！”桑娜喊了一聲，心想，莫不是出什么事了？她猛地推開門。
屋子里沒有生爐子，又潮濕又陰冷。桑娜舉起馬燈，想看看病人在什么地方。首先投入眼簾的是對著門放著的一張床，床上仰面躺著她的女鄰居。她一動不動。桑娜把馬燈舉得更近一些，不錯，是西蒙。她頭往后仰著，冰冷發青的臉上顯出死的寧靜，一只蒼白僵硬的手像要抓住什么似的，從稻草鋪上垂下來。就在這死去的母親旁邊，睡著兩個很小的孩子，都是卷頭發，圓臉蛋，身上蓋著舊衣服，蜷縮著身子，兩個淺黃頭發的小腦袋緊緊地靠在一起。顯然，母親在臨死的時候，拿自己的衣服蓋在他們身上，還用舊頭巾包住他們的小腳。孩子的呼吸均勻而平靜，他們睡得正香甜。
桑娜用頭巾裹住睡著的'孩子，把他們抱回家里。她的心跳得很厲害，自己也不知道為什么要這樣做，但是覺得非這樣做不可。她把這兩個熟睡的孩子放在床上，讓他們同自己的孩子睡在一起，又連忙把帳子拉好。
桑娜臉色蒼白，神情激動。她忐忑不安地想∶“他會說什么呢？這是鬧著玩的嗎？自己的五個孩子已經夠他受的了……是他來啦？……不，還沒來！……為什么把他們抱過來啊？……他會揍我的！那也活該，我自作自受……嗯，揍我一頓也好！”
門吱嘎一聲，仿佛有人進來了。桑娜一驚，從椅子上站起來。
“不，沒有人！上帝，我為什么要這樣做？……如今叫我怎么對他說呢？”……桑娜沉思著，久久地坐在床前。
門突然開了，一股清新的海風沖進屋子。魁梧黧黑的漁夫拖著濕淋淋的撕破了的魚網，一邊走進來，一邊說∶“嘿，我回來啦，桑娜！”
“哦，是你！”桑娜站起來，不敢抬起眼睛看他。
“瞧，這樣的夜晚！真可怕！”
“是啊，是啊，天氣壞透了！哦，魚打得怎么樣？”
“糟糕，真糟糕！什么也沒有打到，還把網給撕破了。倒霉，倒霉！天氣可真厲害！我簡直記不起幾時有過這樣的夜晚了，還談得上什么打魚！謝謝上帝，總算活著回來啦。……我不在，你在家里做些什么呢？”
漁夫說著，把網拖進屋里，坐在爐子旁邊。
“我？”桑娜臉色發白，說，“我嘛……縫縫補補……風吼得這么兇，真叫人害怕。我可替你擔心呢！”
“是啊，是啊，”丈夫喃喃地說，“這天氣真是活見鬼！可是有什么辦法呢？”
兩個人沉默了一陣。
“你知道嗎？”桑娜說，“咱們的鄰居西蒙死了。”
“哦？什么時候？”
“我也不知道，大概是昨天。唉！她死得好慘哪！兩個孩子都在她身邊，睡著了。他們那么小……一個還不會說話，另一個剛會爬……”桑娜沉默了。
漁夫皺起眉，他的臉變得嚴肅、憂慮。“嗯，是個問題！”他搔搔后腦勺說，“嗯，你看怎么辦？得把他們抱來，同死人呆在一起怎么行！哦，我們，我們總能熬過去的！快去！別等他們醒來。”
但桑娜坐著一動不動。
