　　一天，“小美人魚”正在海邊玩，突然發現一位王子溺水了。“小美人魚”奮力救活了這位王子，同時也深深地愛上了他。為了能跟王子長相廝守，她找到了海底的女巫師，請求把自己的魚尾變成人的雙腿。但巫師提出，要以“小美人魚”銀鈴般的聲音作為交換。巫師還警告說，一旦王子日后移情別戀，她就會變成海上的泡沫死去。為了追求愛情，這些都沒有讓“小美人魚”動搖，她毅然喝下了變身藥水，尾巴變成了修長的美腿。可她從此也失去了說話的功能。
