  Explain attributive clauses.

  定語從句:在復合句中修飾名詞或者代詞的從句叫做定語從句。先行詞是“人”時,用關系代詞who引導,先行詞是“物”時,用關系代詞that來引導

  a. that即可代表事物也可代表人,which代表事物;它們在從句中作主語或賓語,that在從句中作賓語時常可省略關系詞,which在從句中作賓語則不能省略。而且,如果which在從句中作“不及物動詞+介詞”的介詞的賓語,注意介詞不要丟掉,而且介詞總是放在關系代詞which的前邊,但有的則放在它原來的位置

  b. which作賓語時,根據先行詞與定語從句之間的語義關系,先行詞與which之間的介詞不能丟

  c. 代表物時多用which,但在帶有下列詞的句子中用that而不用which,這些詞包括all,anything, much等,這時的that常被省略

  d. who和whom引導的從句用來修飾人,分別作從句中的主語和賓語,whom作賓語時,要注意它可以作動詞的賓語也可以作介詞的賓語

  e. where是關系副詞,用來表示地點的定語從句

  1. Hmm,depends which movie.

  1) 本句省略了depends前的主語it和whichmovie后的從句部分we’ll watch,這是典型的口語表達形式。在口語和非正式場合,為保持語言簡潔明了,交流者往往會省略彼此所知或邏輯上可明確推斷的內容。例如:

  AnythingI can do for you?

  我能為您做些什么嗎?(省略句首部分Is there)

  Pleasehand me one of those books; I don’t care which.

  請把那些書遞給我一本,不管哪本都行。(省略句尾部分you hand me)

  2) Itdepends (on) who/ what/ how/ whether…是一個常見句型。當depend后接疑問詞及含有疑問詞的短語和從句時,口語中會省略depend后的介詞on,以求話語簡練。例如:

  Itdepends what day you catch me, and at what time of day.

  這取決于你哪天見我,以及見我的時間。

  Well,as for this matter, I can’t decide for now. Depends whether or not your dadwill say yes.

  嗯,這件事我現在決定不了,取決于你老爸是否會同意。

  2. Ijust want to laugh and not think too much.

  這句話中的to laugh和not think too much均為動詞不定式,但后者在not和think之間省略了to。英語語句中當多個不定式結構并列使用時,to出現在第一個結構中,后面的往往會省略。再如:

  Shelikes to sing, dance and hang out with her friends.

  3. Iprefer music that has great lyrics.

  句中的prefer意為“更喜愛;更喜歡”,后可接名詞、v.-ing形式或動詞不定式。如:

  Iprefer the white bag. 我更喜歡那個白色的包。

  Tonyprefers staying / to stay at home on weekends.

  托尼更喜歡周末待在家。

  此外,prefer還可用于句型“prefer ... to ...”中,意為“喜歡……而不喜歡(勝過)……”。如:

  Lindaprefers apples to pears.

  琳達喜歡蘋果而不喜歡梨。

  Iprefer reading books to watching TV. 我喜歡閱讀而不喜歡看電視。

  4. Isuppose I’ll just listen to this new CD I bought.

  仔細觀察下面例句中suppose的用法和意義,然后補全結論部分所缺的內容。

  a. Weare supposed to get there on time.

  b. Isuppose she will be back next year.

  c. —Doyou suppose he will agree?

  —Yes, I suppose so. / No, I suppose not.

  a. Weare supposed to get there on time.

  (1)觀察例句a可知,“被期望/要求做某事”或“該做某事”可用 __________________ 結構表示,含有必須、應該做某事之意,相當于should。

  b. Isuppose she will be back next year.

  c. —Doyou suppose he will agree?

  —Yes, Isuppose so. / No, I suppose not.

  (2)例句b中“suppose +that從句”意為“猜測/假定……”,that可以省略,若為否定句,和think,believe等動詞的用法一樣,應該否定____(主語/從句),即否定前移;例子c中對疑問句作肯定回答可用________________ ,否定回答可用No, I suppose not。

  在復合句中修飾名詞或代詞的從句叫定語從句

  e.g.  I like music that I can dance to.

  music是先行詞,that是關系代詞

  He is the man who I met yesterday.

  man是先行詞,who是關系代詞

  RULES

  人 (n.) + who/that  + 從句      物 (n.) +that/which + 從句

  關系代詞who; that;的作用:

  a. 做代詞,代替先行詞

  b. 在從句中擔任句子成分:主語或賓語

  c. 做連詞,把主句和從句連接起來

  who / that/which 在定語從句中做主語時,

  謂語動詞的單復數應與先行詞保持一致

  I prefer shoes that______ cool.(be)

  I love singers who ______beautiful. (be)
