Dear Haiqing,
I hear you are very unhappy these days because your parents can’t afford to buy you some brand-name shoes and garments you like very much. And I write you this letter to share with you what I think about this matter.
To begin with, beauty is just skin deep. Don’t you think it silly to pay so much attention to your appearance? He is a shallow person who judges others by their appearance; in the same sense, he is a shallow person who thinks that a brand-name garment can add to his glamour. So please, just forget about those brand-name things. What really matters is not whether you wear brand-name shoes or garments but whether your clothes fit you. As a student, you have to wear the school uniform on the weekdays and to be honest, you look very smart in it. Then why do you have to bother to buy the expensive brand-name things?
Secondly, I know your parents are both average workers. Hard as they work, they don’t earn much. Despite this, they do their best to give you a lot of things on demand. Look at the callus on their hands and wrinkles on their faces, how can you have the heart to ask for more than they can afford, which will surely break their hearts? Remember, parents don’t owe us expensive summer camps; they don’t owe us Sony Walkman; nor do they owe us Nike shoes, If you really want those fancy things, you should take a part-time job to contribute to their purchase rather than ask your parents for money to add to their already heavy burden. Don’t you think so?
Thirdly, we have such a wide variety of things available these days which are both nice and inexpensive. What’s the point of paying much more for those brand-name things that are not much better? My friend, take my advice, and you’ll be a wiser consumer as well as a more considerate child to your parents.
Poverty, sometimes, is a good thing. It can test a person’s character and it makes a man out of a boy faster than anything else. Keep working hard, and you are bound to be able to afford those things in the near future. Now you may as well focus on your study. Anyway, wouldn’t it be funny for a would-be achiever to be so preoccupied with brand-name things all day long?

Should Smoking in Public Places be Banned? Nowadays many countries in the world have passed laws to ban smoking in public places. Some smokers claim that their rights are infringed if smoking is forbidden in public places. However, most non-smokers regard the ban as good news. As far as I’m concerned, smoking should be banned in all the public places such as restaurants, theaters and public squares. On the one hand, smoking is harmful both for smokers themselves and others. It is reported that every year smoking causes millions of death around the world. On the other hand, smoking pollutes the air. Just imagine that you sit in a restaurant full of smoke, how can you enjoy your meal there? Besides, smoking is bad for the elevation of a country’s image in the world. I believe if smoking is banned in all the public places, most of us will breathe in more fresh and clean air. Whether getting an off-campus apartment is an appealing option for many college students or not
Nowadays, it has become a trend for many college students to get an off-campus apartment. And it is very popular among college students . They think that it is a chance to close to the community and sharpen themselves. What’s more, through it can make them had their own independent space and let them do what they love to do. More still, it is an effective way to reduce the friction between their roommates and themselves. But, as for as I am concerned , it is not an appealing way for college students to treasure themselves. There are main two reasons to supporting my opinion.
On one hand, our college students do not better to control themselves, in other words, they don’t have the ability to control themselves to resist some bad temptations. So, they may be very easy to led astray. And if they belong to the self-control relatively groups ,they are very easy to be influenced by the outside surroundings. As a result, they may be very easy to do something that is contrary to the ethical norms of society, school rules and regulations ,and the matter of human nature.
On the other hand, there are some security risks to get an off-campus apartment . Firstly, the nearby surroundings of rental concentrated is very bad , garbage and sewage can be seen here and there, it influences the
rental college students’ healthy seriously. Secondly , a great many rental housing are illegal structures; and a large number of rental housing have bad doors and windows that are in disrepair ; more still, there are a lot of wire aging. As an consequence, it exists many security risks. Finally, some criminal may be easy to take aim at college students ,who get an off-campus apartment , and commit their crimes.
At last, there are some suggestions for it. Firstly, The community should have a responsible attitude to serve college students, and really provide them with a good surrounding environment. Secondly, the school should seriously think about it, and they also should strictly management it and increase the hardware construction and create a better living, learning environment, so that students are willing to live in the school. Finally, if the college student decides to go out to live, it had better to ensure himself security ; and do best to choose the place ,which has a better environment for living.

i leaned against a poplar tree and gazed towards the descending sun. it was no longer overbearing with its blinding glare but looked as lovely as a big orange. it had cast a golden glow over everything and gave the world a transient gilded dignity and a poetry that almost moved me to tears. hello, beautiful world! a voice rose from the depth of my heart. i was so grateful to be able to see all these brilliant things which i had neglected for so long.
really, i was not so contented with life before i had that eye surgery. it hurt terribly. but bodily pain is nothing compared with the pain of a sinking and depressed heart as i had to live in complete darkness for two weeks. from the first minute i was shut up in that intangible, vast and some what sinister darkness, i became aware of the priceless gift i had been bestowed - my eyesight. how i would long to see! i sat on the lawn, my fingers lingered on the supple leaves, my heart felt the subtle elasticity of the earth. green, green... the color of life is wonderful!
cheerful little birds jumped about me, chirping. they irritated me by their teasing chattering. i felt as helpless as a trapped beast. the darkness was immense, thick, suffocating. i turned to my memory for help and tried to recollect some old fragments of pictures stored in my mind. but my mind was a blur. i understood for the first time that actually i had been blind since long ago. day after day i bustled on proudly wearing a pair of ornaments and saw nothing. the beauty, the loveliness had escaped me long ago. it was in darkness that i first saw myself. how pitiably blind i had always been! the awareness wrenched my heart with a sharp twinge.
the day i got rid of the bandages on my eyes was unforgettably splendid. i opened my eyes timidly, amazed by the glorious world bathed in the sun. at that time i saw, i saw rippling grass with dripping greenness, i saw little sparrows hopping here and there, bobbing their heads up and down, i saw the vast sky peacefully looking down at me with that purity and dignity which refined my soul. i was so grateful that my eyes were blurred with tears. being blind once had forced me to discover the blindness in my soul; at the cost of pain i tasted again the sweetness of life. what a blessing!
